An Amazing Cheeseburger at BEAR Steak Sandwiches

BEAR Steak Sandwiches recently added a cheeseburger to their delightfully focused menu (they serve three things: a steak sandwich, a roast pork sandwich, and now, a burger), and yeah.  Of course.  Of course I need to try that.  Their steak sandwich is easily one of the best sandwiches in the city.  So if they’re taking a swing at a hamburger?  Yes please.

Bonus: it’s a big fat chunky boy rather than the thin smashed burger that’s so omnipresent in the city.  I like a smashed burger as much as the next guy, but come on.  Other types of hamburgers exist.

The cheeseburger, as per their menu: “Medium rare chuck patty, American cheese, white onion, pickle, sesame bun. Sauce on the side.”

I skipped the onion, but otherwise got this as is.

Wow, it’s good.  Seriously, seriously good.  The patty is a thing of beauty: amazing beefy flavour, great texture, perfectly seasoned.  That beefy flavour slaps you in the face in all the best ways.  I know that it looks very rare in that photo, but it was cooked to a perfect medium rare and had none of the mushiness that you’ll find in too-rare hamburger patties.  It was glorious.

It comes with a little tub of what I’m assuming is their chimichurri sauce with mayo mixed in; it’s seriously delicious, but completely unnecessary.  When the beef is this good, I don’t need anything to distract from its flavour; the zippiness from the pickles and the salty richness from the cheese are all you need.

The bun has a bit more heft than your typical burger bun, but since the patty here is so substantial, it totally works.

My burger blog is pretty much defunct at this point, but if I were to review this there, I’d rate it a perfect four out of four.  I have some minor nitpicks (the cheese could have been meltier, the grind on the beef could have been a bit more coarse, and the beef could have been slightly fattier/juicier), but those are teeny-tiny complaints about an otherwise superlative hamburger.

The Ruffles Crunch Teen Burger at A&W is a standard A&W bacon cheeseburger with a bunch of chips in it.  The end.

Oh, I guess I should write more?  I’ll write a bit more.  But that pretty much covers it.

The burger, as per A&W’s website: “A perfectly seasoned grass-fed beef patty topped with Ruffles Cheddar & Sour Cream chips, lettuce, onions, tomato, bacon, cheddar cheese and a creamy garlic and jalapeño aioli, served on a freshly toasted sesame seed bun.”

It’s not bad.  The fat stack of Ruffles adds a decent amount of crunch and some nice zippiness from the seasoning.  They make for a decent burger topping, but I think it’s unlikely anyone will walk away from thing thinking that chips should be on all burgers.  There’s a reason chips aren’t on all burgers.  They’re a bit overwhelming as a topping.

I’ll admit that I didn’t even realize the sauce was supposed to be a creamy garlic and jalapeño aioli until I started writing this review.  There wasn’t really enough there for any of the flavours to stand out; it tasted like plain mayo to me.

The rest of the burger is what it is.  The patty was a bit dry, but it’s tasty enough.  It’s fine.  The whole thing is fine.  It’s a fast food burger with chips in it.  It’s not one of those things where you’re like “wow, this is so much better than I was imagining!”  It’s exactly what you’re imagining.

Amazing Mexican Food at Puerto Bravo

When you’re eating a place that’s been featured in the Michelin Guide, it kinda elevates your expectations a bit.  Not that Michelin is an infallible arbiter of taste, but generally speaking, the restaurants they highlight are above average.

Well, Puerto Brave has a “Bib Gourmand” designation from Michelin, my expectations were quite high, and even still, I was pretty blown away by how good everything was.

I tried a few things.  I started with the guacamole (“Avocado, Lime, Cilantro, Jalapeño, Chips,”) and it was fantastic.  A lot of guacamole tends to be a bit too oniony for me, with their harshness overwhelming the relatively delicate flavour of the avocado.  Here, instead of mixing onions right in, they add zippy pickled onions on top, which is a huge improvement that lets the flavour of the creamy avocado shine through.  And the tortilla chips on the side are way above average, with a hearty crunch and a nice toasty corn flavour.

Up next was the carne asada taco (“Grilled Beef, Asadero Cheese, Onions, Cabbage, Radish, Avocado Salsa, Red Salsa”).  Every element here just works, with a nice balance of flavours and some seriously tasty grilled beef (a lot of the time with a taco like this, the flavour of the beef is buried by other stuff, but here it’s clearly the star of the show (and extremely delicious)).

Last and definitely not least was the Wera tostada (“Octopus, Shrimp, Macha Mayonnaise, Pico de Gallo, Avocado, Salsa Macha”).  Wow this was good.  The contrast between the crunchy tortilla, creamy avocado and meaty octopus and shrimp was so satisfying (the octopus, in particular, was almost improbably tender).  I think this was my favourite of the three, and that’s saying something because everything was extremely delicious.

I know some people are down on the whole small plates format, but I like it.  It’s always nice to try a variety of stuff.  I guess the main complaint is that you wind up paying more for less food, but that’s not an issue here; with a couple of exceptions, pretty much everything on the menu is in the low- to mid-teens, and the portions are surprisingly generous.

I tried a few things.  First up is the spicy scallion and avocado slaw: “mixed greens, cabbage, pickled chilies, bell peppers, crispy shallots, sweet and spicy sesame dressing.”  This was a fantastic salad — it’s got a great variety of textures (crispy, crunchy, and creamy) a zippy dressing, and nice pops of acidity from the pickled chilies.

Up next was the squash poutine: “tempura squash, cheese curds, curried gravy, roasted kimchi, pickled onions.”  This has very few poutine-like properties (the gooey cheese is fully liquefied, the gravy — while delicious — tastes nothing like a traditional gravy, and the squash can’t really be compared to fries), but whatever it is, it’s very tasty.  I wish the squash were a bit crispier, but I’d happily order this again.

The loosey (“Korean Big Mac, served on Texas toast”) was the closest thing to a miss, and even it was tasty enough.  The beef was too tightly packed and a bit tough, and none of the flavours struck me as particularly Korean or McDonald’s-esque.  Still, it’s a decent enough burger.

Last but not least was the bulgogi cheesesteak (“sliced marinated steak, American cheese, sambal mayo, toasted baguette”).  Crossing bulgogi and a Philly cheesesteak is actually kind of ingenious, and the bulgogi here is super tasty.  I wish it had been a bit cheesier (it had one thin slice of partially melted American), but it’s still a great sandwich.

Fattoush Sandwich Club serves a bunch of Middle Eastern-inspired sandwiches (though, oddly enough, fattoush is a salad and not a sandwich, and does not feature in any of their sandwich offerings).

I tried a couple of sandwiches, and they were both quite tasty.

The first was the Smashed Beef: “Beef Mix, Pomegranate Molasses, Tahini.”  This is sort of burger-esque, though the meat tastes more like kofta than like a burger patty (this is not a bad thing).   The pomegranate molasses adds some sweet zippiness, and the tahini adds richness.  It’s a solid sandwich.

I think I liked the Crispy Eggplant even better: “Eggplant, Siracha Toum, Tomato Confit.”  As you can see from the photo, this is a substantially sloppier sandwich, with a whole bunch of lettuce and tasty sauces.  But the real star of the show is the eggplant itself; when they say it’s crispy, it’s crispy.  It’s breaded and fried, and it has a very pronounced crunchiness that holds up even to the very saucy sandwich.  The contrast between the crunchy exterior and the creamy interior is thoroughly delicious.
