Solid Mexican Food at Los Compass Tacos

Los Compass Tacos has a setup that’s quite Gus Tacos-esque — they have a variety of proteins (al pastor, grilled steak, grilled chicken, and cactus) that you can get in various configurations (tacos, burritos, quesadillas, etc.).

Los Compass Tacos

Tacos is right there in the name, so that’s what I got.

Los Compass Tacos

I ordered one al pastor, and one asada (grilled steak). You can pick from a corn or flour tortilla; I went with corn for the al pastor, and flour for the asada.

Los Compass Tacos

Both were quite good. In particular, the al pastor was nicely marinated and quite tender, with a satisfying punch of sweetness from the grilled pineapple.

Los Compass Tacos

The steak was maybe a bit lacking in flavour (I probably should have availed myself of the sauce bar off to the side of the restaurant, but since both tacos came sauced, I figured I’d try them as-is), but was otherwise quite satisfying, with a nice smoky flavour from the grill.
Neither taco knocked my socks off, but both were quite satisfying.

Los Compass Tacos

I actually wound up coming back to try the pollo (grilled chicken) burrito, and… I think the tacos are the thing to get here. It wasn’t bad, but it was a bit plain and one-note salty (the fact that I asked for no onions and got onions certainly didn’t enhance my enjoyment of this thing).

Tasty Mexican Food at Pa’l Antojo

Pa’l Antojo is in the middle of an industrial wasteland near the airport, so it definitely qualifies as a hidden gem.  I was mostly in the area to pick up nuts from Master Delight, which I think sells the best nuts in the city.  But it’s worth the trek to check out Pa’l Antojo either way; the food is stellar.

Pa'l Antojo

I tried a couple of things.  I’d heard the quesabirrias (“stewed beef seasoned on a crunchy corn tortilla with cheese, cilantro, onion and beef broth”) are the thing to order here, so that was a must.

Pa'l Antojo

It’s very, very good, with a great contrast between the slightly crispy tortilla, the gooey cheese, and the tender beef.  Once you dip it into the very flavourful broth, you’re off to the races.  I could eat a million of these.

Pa'l Antojo

I also tried a pastor taco, and it was just as good, with the very generous amount of pork being crispy and abundantly tasty, and with the double layer of fresh corn tortillas complementing it perfectly.

Solid Tacos at Azul

I think the first thing I should note about Azul is: it’s not easy to find!  It’s in the food court at First Canadian Place downtown, except, oh wait, apparently there’s more than one food court in First Canadian Place?  I wandered around the one on the lower level for longer than I should admit, and the whole time I’m looking at Google Maps like, it should be right here, what gives?

It turns out there’s a whole other food court on the upper floor, which is not confusing at all.  Totally reasonable to have two food courts within a couple of floors of each other.

Azul

Anyway, Azul.  It’s a Mexican eatery that features various tacos, tortas, and bowls.  I tried a couple of the tacos: chilorio (“pork shoulder – marinated and slow cooked, pickled onions”) and Baja (“fish – battered and fried, cabbage slaw, lime mayo”).  You also get a little tub of salsa on the side that can be mild, medium, or hot.  I went with hot.

Azul

The tacos both come on blue corn tortillas that are reasonably fresh and have a decent amount of heft to them (both tacos were crammed with stuff, and the tortillas held up nicely).

Azul

Neither knocked my socks off, but both were quite tasty — particularly the chilorio, which features a generous amount of tender, meaty pork.  The fish was a bit dry, but it’s topped with so much stuff that it barely matters.  For something from a food court, you could do much worse.

Tasty Mexican Food at Taqueria el Pastorcito

It’s always nice when the name of a restaurant tells you what to order.  At Taqueria el Pastorcito, you’ve gotta order a taco, and you’ve gotta order the pastor.  Easy enough.  And indeed, both are extremely delicious.

Taqueria el Pastorcito

I tried a couple of things.  I got a chorizo taco, and a pastor burrito.

Taqueria el Pastorcito

The taco (which comes topped with onions and cilantro; I skipped the onions) is really tasty, with two very fresh corn tortillas stuffed with an extremely generous amount of nicely browned chorizo.  The spicing of the sausage is a bit on the mild side, but there are an array of very tasty sauces on the side that makes quick work of that.  It’s a great taco.

Taqueria el Pastorcito

The pastor was even better.  The burrito was a bit odd; as far as I can tell, the filling was basically just meat and a bit of cilantro.  But the pork was so tasty, with a nice kick to it and a whole bunch of the delicious crispy bits that you’re hoping for from spit-roasted meat like this, that it totally works.

Taqueria el Pastorcito

The place was packed on a recent Saturday afternoon, and it’s very easy to see why.

Quick Bites: Masa Deli, T.O. Dickens Restaurant, Papi Chulo’s

Sausage and egg breakfast sandwich from Masa Deli
Sausage and egg breakfast sandwich from Masa Deli

I think my credibility takes a hit every time I say this (hey, I am what I am), but I feel like as far as breakfast sandwiches go, a McMuffin is surprisingly hard to beat.  Whenever I get a breakfast sandwich (which inevitably costs two or three times as much as McMuffin) I ask myself: is this better than a McMuffin?  And nine times out of ten, the answer is no, not really.  The breakfast sandwich at Masa Deli features “chicken sausage, chive omelette, white cheddar, pickles, aioli, hot sauce, English muffin.”  It’s tasty, with perfectly prepared eggs and an enjoyably flavourful sausage.  But the omelette was a bit too substantial for the sandwich, and all the toppings were so sloppy that the toasted English muffin had thoroughly lost its crispiness by the time I ate it (which was maybe like three or four minutes after they handed it to me).

I tried a couple of the sandwiches from T.O. Dickens Restaurant, a no-frills joint with a nice patio in Kensington Market — the bacon grilled cheese, and the BLT.  Nothing about either of them particularly stood out (and I wish the quality of the cheese were a bit higher), but they were both solid sandwiches.  Is it the most exciting option in Kensington Market?  It sure isn’t, but everything I tried was pretty good.

Speaking of restaurants with nice patios and solid but unspectacular food… Papi Chulo’s.  It’s fine!  I tried a couple of their tacos, and both were perfectly tasty.  It’s not the type of place that anyone is going to be raving about, but if you’re on Ossington and you’re looking for a nice patio with decent food, you could do worse.
