Another Delicious Doughnut at Dipped Donuts

It’s been a few years since I’ve been to Dipped Donuts, and I figured another visit was probably in order.  Every other doughnut I’ve had from this place has been great, and hey, guess what?  It’s still great.

Dipped Donuts

I’m a big fan of the flavours here, which manage to be unique without ever coming off as gimicky.  Whoever’s coming up with the doughnuts clearly knows what they’re doing.

On this visit I got the saffron pistachio: “filled with pistachio pastry cream and topped with rich saffron glaze, pistachios and rose petals.”

Dipped Donuts

It’s so good; the pistachio filling is creamy and packed with pistachio flavour (and it tastes like real pistachio, not pistachio extract), and the glaze gives it a really nice floral hum that complements the nuttiness perfectly.  It’s sweet, but doesn’t punch you in the face like so many doughnuts do.  It’s great.

And of course, the doughnut itself is as tasty as ever.  Is Dipped Donuts the best doughnut shop in the city?  It might be.

Quick Bites: Masa Deli, T.O. Dickens Restaurant, Papi Chulo’s

I think my credibility takes a hit every time I say this (hey, I am what I am), but I feel like as far as breakfast sandwiches go, a McMuffin is surprisingly hard to beat.  Whenever I get a breakfast sandwich (which inevitably costs two or three times as much as McMuffin) I ask myself: is this better than a McMuffin?  And nine times out of ten, the answer is no, not really.  The breakfast sandwich at Masa Deli features “chicken sausage, chive omelette, white cheddar, pickles, aioli, hot sauce, English muffin.”  It’s tasty, with perfectly prepared eggs and an enjoyably flavourful sausage.  But the omelette was a bit too substantial for the sandwich, and all the toppings were so sloppy that the toasted English muffin had thoroughly lost its crispiness by the time I ate it (which was maybe like three or four minutes after they handed it to me).

I tried a couple of the sandwiches from T.O. Dickens Restaurant, a no-frills joint with a nice patio in Kensington Market — the bacon grilled cheese, and the BLT.  Nothing about either of them particularly stood out (and I wish the quality of the cheese were a bit higher), but they were both solid sandwiches.  Is it the most exciting option in Kensington Market?  It sure isn’t, but everything I tried was pretty good.

Speaking of restaurants with nice patios and solid but unspectacular food… Papi Chulo’s.  It’s fine!  I tried a couple of their tacos, and both were perfectly tasty.  It’s not the type of place that anyone is going to be raving about, but if you’re on Ossington and you’re looking for a nice patio with decent food, you could do worse.

Nashville Hot Chicken at Knockout Chicken

Knockout Chicken has been serving up fried chicken sandwiches in Kensington Market for a few years now (they also have a location in Mississauga), and yeah, I can see why they have staying power.  Their fried chicken is pretty solid.

They have a whole bunch of sandwiches on the menu, but the woman behind the counter said the Nashville Sandwich is the most popular (“Nashville-style fried chicken breast, homemade coleslaw, pickles, jalapenos, and chipotle aioli”), so that’s what I got.

Knockout Chicken

It’s not the crispiest or the juiciest fried chicken I’ve ever had, but I enjoyed it.  It’s got a decent kick to it, it’s nice and flavourful, and the slightly sweet bun suits it well.  It’s got a bit more going on than you’d expect from Nashville hot chicken, but for the most part, it works.

My only real issue here is with the coleslaw, which tastes heavily of sour cream and is a bit one-note rich.  I think the sandwich would have been improved with less (or none) of this stuff, but everything else was tasty enough that this wasn’t a huge deal.

Delicious, Beefy Sandwiches at Marq’s Chicago Beef

If you’re looking for a tasty, beefy sandwich, look no further: you’ve found it.  Go to Marq’s and thank me later.

As the name implies, Marq’s serves Chicago-style Italian beef sandwiches, which features a whole bunch of roast beef on a French roll, served with a beefy au jus sauce (which, unlike a French dip, is incorporated right into the sandwich).

The sandwich is served as saucy as you like it: either juiced, dipped, or dunked, with dipped being the default level.  You can further customize your sandwich with giardiniera (spicy pickled veggies) or sweet peppers, or if you want to really live it up, both.

I got the sandwich dipped with both, and it was extremely tasty.  It’s exactly what you want it to be — the beef has a great flavour, it’s super tender, and the sauce-soaked bread is the perfect vehicle.  That’s not to mention the zingy giardiniera, which does a great job of adding some brightness to the very heavy sandwich.

There’s not much else to say about it — it’s a great sandwich.  There’s a whole lot I liked about it, and nothing that I didn’t.

A Top Notch Sandwich at Otto’s Berlin Doner

I tried Otto’s Berlin Doner around when it first opened and quite enjoyed it; I’m happy to report that not only has the place not missed a step, I think they’ve actually gotten better.  I just had the veal and lamb doner, and I was pretty blown away by how good it was.

Otto's Berlin Doner

Every element works so well — it’s got that great bread, which is delightfully crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and it’s got the perfect balance between tasty meat and fresh veggies, with the sauces all complementing it so well.

You can choose between garlic, yogurt, and hot sauce — or you can do what I did and get all three, which is definitely what you should do because it’s a very tasty combo (the hot sauce isn’t hot at all, but it’s hard to complain when it’s all this tasty).

But it’s the veal and lamb that really makes the sandwich sing.  It’s super tender, with a great meaty flavour from the lamb and a punch of rosemary-tinged herbiness.  And it’s absolutely crammed with the crispy bits that make a sandwich like this so addictive.

I mean, look at this picture.  Look at the crispy bits.  That’s a thing of beauty.

You can also add feta cheese and/or fries to your sandwich for a buck a piece, and again, you should definitely do that.  The fries add more delightful savoury crispiness, and the feta brings creamy pops of saltiness that really rounds out the sandwich.
