The Ruffles Crunch Teen Burger at A&W is a standard A&W bacon cheeseburger with a bunch of chips in it.  The end.

Oh, I guess I should write more?  I’ll write a bit more.  But that pretty much covers it.

Ruffles Crunch Teen Burger at A&W

The burger, as per A&W’s website: “A perfectly seasoned grass-fed beef patty topped with Ruffles Cheddar & Sour Cream chips, lettuce, onions, tomato, bacon, cheddar cheese and a creamy garlic and jalapeño aioli, served on a freshly toasted sesame seed bun.”

It’s not bad.  The fat stack of Ruffles adds a decent amount of crunch and some nice zippiness from the seasoning.  They make for a decent burger topping, but I think it’s unlikely anyone will walk away from thing thinking that chips should be on all burgers.  There’s a reason chips aren’t on all burgers.  They’re a bit overwhelming as a topping.

I’ll admit that I didn’t even realize the sauce was supposed to be a creamy garlic and jalapeño aioli until I started writing this review.  There wasn’t really enough there for any of the flavours to stand out; it tasted like plain mayo to me.

The rest of the burger is what it is.  The patty was a bit dry, but it’s tasty enough.  It’s fine.  The whole thing is fine.  It’s a fast food burger with chips in it.  It’s not one of those things where you’re like “wow, this is so much better than I was imagining!”  It’s exactly what you’re imagining.

Tasty Breakfast Sandwiches at La Boulangerie

The breakfast sandwich at La Boulangerie was recommended by no less than Susur Lee, so I figured it was probably worth checking out.

And clearly, La Boulangerie is a popular place, because it was absolutely swarming with people when I visited on a recent Sunday afternoon.

La Boulangerie

They have a handful of tasty-looking sandwiches on the menu, but on this particular visit, I was a man on a mission.

The breakfast sandwich, as per their menu: “egg, ham, bacon, white cheddar.”

It’s a well-executed breakfast sandwich, that’s for sure.  The eggs are perfectly cooked, and the quality of the ham and the bacon are top-notch.

La Boulangerie

I don’t know if it’s worth going out of your way for, though.  It’s very good, but it’s such a basic, unornamented sandwich that it’s hard to get too excited about it.

This is probably not something I should admit publicly, but it also doesn’t pass my personal “is this substantially better than a McMuffin?” test.  I clearly have garbage taste, because I think a McMuffin from McDonald’s is better than like 90 percent of the fancy breakfast sandwiches in the city, including this one.

Tasty Cake Doughnuts at Maverick’s Donut Company

Maverick’s is an Ottawa-based doughnut chain that opened their first location in Toronto last year.  You might be thinking that we have enough doughnut joints in the city, but you’re wrong and here’s why: Maverick’s specializes in cake-based doughnuts.  Most doughnut places will have a cake doughnut or two on the menu, but here it’s pretty much all of them.

Maverick's Donut Company

I tried six: cherry glazed, pecan pie, maple bacon, double chocolate, lemon ricotta, and chocolate coconut.

They were all quite delightful.  The cake is dense but not too dense, they’re not overly sweet (aside from maybe the maple bacon, which I still quite enjoyed), and they have a light crispiness on their exterior.  They’re top quality doughnuts.

And the flavours were all great, though if I had to pick a favourite, it might be the nutty pecan pie.  Or the double chocolate, which had a really satisfying chocolate flavour.  Or the cherry glazed, which tasted like a doughnut and a maraschino cherry had a baby.  Or the lemon ricotta, which had a nice tartness and a satisfying creaminess.  Or the maple bacon, which had satisfying pops of saltiness from the bacon to offset the sweetness of the maple.  Or the chocolate coconut, which is always a tasty combo.

Oh, I just named all the doughnuts, didn’t I.  Well you know what?  I liked all of them.  They’re all my favourite.  Deal with it.

Quick Bites: Sun’s Kitchen, Bei Wei Ju Dumpling House, Perkins

Noodles with Spicy Pork from Sun's Kitchen
Noodles with Spicy Pork from Sun’s Kitchen

Sun’s Kitchen is (was?) my favourite restaurant in the Pacific Mall food court, but sadly, it seems that they’ve gone downhill.  I pretty much always order the same thing here (noodles with spicy pork), and mostly, it was just as tasty as ever.  But the real attraction of this place are the delightfully chewy noodles that they hand-pull on site, and on this particular visit they were shockingly mushy.  My dining companion said he had the same experience a few months ago, so I’m not even sure if this was a one-time mistake.  They’ve also stopped serving the soup and soy milk that used to come on the side (and the bowl now comes with an egg), so I wonder if there was a change of ownership.  Either way, I can’t imagine I’ll be back anytime soon, sadly.

Speaking of the Pacific Mall, I also tried these fried dumplings from Bei Wei Ju Dumpling House, and they were quite satisfying.  The filling could have been a bit more generous (there was a marble-sized ball of meat in the centre of each dumpling, which was otherwise all wrapper), but the exterior had a nice balance of chewiness and crispiness, and the whole thing was very tasty.

I was actually pretty excited to try Perkins, an American chain with a menu that reminds me of places like Bob Evans and Cracker Barrel (both of which have zero locations in Canada, sadly).  I ordered the Southern Fried Chicken Biscuit Breakfast, and while the whole thing wasn’t unpleasant to eat, I think I could have had roughly the same experience (at a fraction of the price) by going to the supermarket and buying a Hungry Man dinner.

Unique Fried Chicken at Rick’s Good Eats

Tucked away in an industrial area of Mississauga, Rick’s Good Eats is a delightful hidden gem serving tasty Indian fusion dishes.  I had the burger there a few years ago and quite enjoyed it, and I just tried the fried chicken sandwich and liked it even better.

Rick’s Fried Chicken Sandwich, as per the menu: “Battered, double-fried Tandoori Chicken dressed with signature Ting Tang sauce, Achari Mayo, lettuce, chopped tomato and onion, pickles and cilantro.”

Rick's Good Eats

The woman behind the counter also asked if I wanted to add bacon, and of course I said yes.  I’m not gonna say no to bacon; what am I, a maniac?

(Though as it turns out I safely could have said no to the bacon — there are so many bold flavours and textures here that the bacon is pretty much completely lost.)

Rick's Good Eats

It’s a phenomenal fried chicken sandwich.  In particular, the idea of crossing tandoori chicken and fried chicken is actually kind of genius.  The very tender chicken has a pronounced marinated tandoori flavour and an intensely satisfying exterior crunch.  It’s very, very good.

Everything else is just as good, with a great contrast between the zippy Ting Tang sauce and the creamy mayo, additional crunch and freshness from the veggies, and a fluffy bun that does a good job of holding it all together.  It’s easily one of the better fried chicken sandwiches I’ve had in a while.
