The World Menu Heist!  It’s back!!  Is it sad that this is probably one of the highlights of my summer?  Please don’t answer that.

As I was leaving the office at lunch today to head to McDonald’s, in my head I was like, we should all be chanting “Menu heist! Menu heist! Menu heist!”  I believe this is a totally rational thought that doesn’t raise any troubling implications about my mental state.

McExtreme Pulled Pork at McDonald's (World Menu Heist)

For all the normal people out there who don’t get unreasonably excited about novelty menus at McDonald’s, the World Menu Heist is a promotion featuring various items pulled from McDonald’s locations around the world.  This year, that includes France, Spain, Australia, Japan, and the Netherlands.

Obviously I’ll be trying everything (what do you think, I won’t be trying every item on this menu?  Get out of here) but I started with the McExtreme Pulled Pork from Spain.

Here’s how McDonald’s describes it: “Pulled from Spain, now in Canada. Layers of pulled pork in BBQ sauce, beef, hickory-smoked bacon, white processed cheese, crispy onions for some crunch and creamy chipotle sauce for heat make for one delicious sandwich. One bite leads to another… and somehow it’s all gone.”

I’ve had some weird international McDonald’s menu items over the years, but somehow, pulled pork on a burger at McDonald’s strikes me as particularly weird.

It’s a tasty burger, though sadly, the pulled pork element is negligible.  There’s a teeny-tiny amount of pulled pork on the burger, and it’s spread very thin over the large patty.  You can taste the BBQ sauce, but I suspect if I had eaten this blind, I wouldn’t have even known the burger had pulled pork on it.  There’s just too much other stuff going on.

I did try a little bit on its own, and it’s exactly what you think it’ll be.  It’s pretty mushy and soaked in enough BBQ sauce to completely wipe out any pork flavour — but that sauce is tasty, and it’s pleasant enough as a burger topping.

Otherwise, this is probably one of the better burgers McDonald’s has come out with in a while.  The creamy chipotle sauce is pleasingly zesty and very mildly spicy, and the BBQ sauce adds a nice sweet/savoury kick.  The cheese, bacon, and crispy onions complement it well.  It’s a solid fast food burger.

Solid Tacos at Contigo Taco Bar

I wanted to check out Contigo Taco Bar after reading about it in Toronto Life, and yeah, it’s good.  Do you need to stop what you’re doing and check it out immediately?  Probably not, but it’s a solid taco joint.

I tried a few things.  First up were a couple of tacos: chorizo, and BBQ pulled pork.

Contigo Taco Bar

These might have been the messiest tacos I’ve ever eaten; the tortillas (flour, if I’m remembering right?) are a bit on the small side, and they absolutely load them up.  They definitely do their best to give you your money’s worth, that’s for sure.

I liked both, but the pulled pork, which featured a generous amount of tender pork shoulder doused in a pleasantly zesty BBQ sauce, was my favourite of the two.

The aforementioned Toronto Life article specifically mentioned the fries supreme, so I got an order of that as well.  This featured a very generous amount of melted cheese, cheese sauce, sour cream, and a whole bunch of veggies on top of a bunch of relatively well-prepared frozen fries.  It’s not gourmet, but it hits the spot.

Tasty Sandwiches at Cubano Kings

As you’d expect from the name, Cubano Kings is pretty much all about Cubanos (though they do have a few other things on the menu).  They actually serve five different varieties of the sandwich — who knew that many types of Cuban sandwiches even existed?

Cubano Kings

The Miami Cubano (“slow-roasted mojo pork, black forest ham, Swiss cheese, mustard & pickle”) is the classic Cubano we all know and love, so that’s what I ordered.

It’s a solid sandwich.  It’s nicely pressed with a crisp exterior and gooey cheese within, and it has a good proportion of ham and roast pork.

Cubano Kings

It was very light on the mustard and probably could have used a bit more to cut through the richness of the other ingredients, but otherwise this was a solid, no-frills Cuban sandwich.

Fantastic Mexican Food at Itacate

Itacate
Location
: 998 Saint Clair Avenue West, Toronto
Website: https://itacate-toronto.com/

Itacate is a hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant that serves some seriously, seriously tasty eats.  They only have a handful of tables, so I guess it’s mostly a take-out place, but it’s worth either waiting for one of those tables or eating in your car.  It’s so good.

I tried a couple of things.  I wanted to try at least one taco, and their menu is extensive, with almost a dozen choices.  I went with the carnitas, which comes with a very generous amount of ultra-tender pork on a double corn tortilla.

Itacate

They asked if I wanted onions and cilantro, and I said no because I am a card-carrying raw onion hater; in retrospect, I probably should have said no to the onion and yes to the cilantro, but that pork was so incredibly tender and flavourful that it was beyond delicious with just a little bit of the zippy salsa that comes on the side.

Itacate

I like corn tortillas, but they’re always a bit of a crapshoot, because if they’re not very fresh, they can dry out and become unpleasant to eat.  That definitely wasn’t an issue here.

I also tried the pambazo: “bread dipped in guajillo sauce with sausage and potatoes, with sour cream, lettuce and cheese.”

Itacate

Man, what a sandwich.  Perfect bread (with a light crispiness on its exterior and some nice flavour from the guajillo sauce), tasty sausage, and some great texture and flavour from the lettuce and cheese.  Once you add some of the aforementioned salsa?  All-time great sandwich.  Crazy good.

Chinese Fast Food at Bingz Crispy Burger

Bingz Crispy Burger
Location
: 3401 Dufferin Street, North York (inside Yorkdale Mall)
Website: https://www.bingzcanada.com/

Bingz is a Chinese chain that sells a variety of sandwiches made with a crispy, flaky bun, along with a handful of side dishes.

I went with the signature pork, and it’s delightfully simple — it’s just braised pork shoulder on a bun.  That’s it.  Want any condiments?  Go somewhere else!

Bingz Crispy Burger

It’s quite good.  It’s very no-frills, but the pork is meaty, flavourful, and super tender.  The crispy bun is a good mix of flaky/crispy and chewy, and suits the pork perfectly.

(Also, this probably goes without saying, but this thing is absolutely not a burger in any appreciable way, making the name a bit of a head-scratcher.)

And it’s only six bucks, which is actually a pretty great deal; they manage to cram a decent amount of meat into that thing.  For something from a food court in a mall, it’s way better than it needs to be.
