Tasty Flavours at Knockout Ice Cream

Knockout Ice Cream is a new ice cream shop in a formerly industrial area that’s recently become a foodie hotspot — places like Parallel and Famiglia Baldassare are right around the corner.

I’m interested in a new ice cream place by default, but the fact that this is the latest venture from Arthur Pezzelli, who was also involved with Bang Bang and Koishi, clinches it.  Bang Bang serves what is clearly the best ice cream in the city, so of course.

The set-up is quite Bang Bang-esque, with the flavours listed on the wall behind the register, a freezer selling to-go tubs to the left, and a space that’s basically just big enough to order and then leave (they have a few chairs outside the entrance).

No ice cream sandwiches, however, though they do have a machine to make bubble waffles.

I tried the dulce de leche, which has a deep, intense caramel flavour (the ice cream itself tastes like dulce de leche rather than having sauce swirled inside).  It was also incredibly rich and creamy, so it’s clearly top-tier ice cream.

It was a touch too sweet, however, and the texture was gummier than I’d like, so I don’t think Bang Bang has anything to worry about quite yet.  But the place literally just opened (June 21st, according to their Instagram); assuming they work out the kinks, I think it could easily become one of the better ice cream shops in the city.

Tarte au Citron at Bang Bang

I think this is going to be the shortest post I’ve ever written.  The tarte au citron flavour at Bang Bang is basically like the best lemon meringue pie you’ve ever had, but as an ice cream.

Lemon meringue pie?  Delicious.  Bang Bang?  Delicious.  Cram those two things together?  Yeah, it’s delicious.  Of course it’s delicious.  That’s just math.

The ice cream is creamy and pleasantly tart, with a great lemony flavour.  It’s got silky meringue swirled in for some additional creaminess and to help cut the tartness of the ice cream.  And then there are buttery, delicious chunks of pie crust.

It’s all just as good as you’d hope it would be.

Tasty Frozen Custard at Woodfire Sandwich Co.

I’ve mentioned before that frozen custard is almost impossible to find in the city.  Which is completely baffling, because we have about a million ice cream shops.  There’s no reason we shouldn’t have a bunch of places serving delicious frozen custard.

As far as I know, we have two: Rita’s, an outpost of an American chain near Kensington Market, and now Woodfire Sandwich Co.

If you’re not familiar with frozen custard (and if you’re living in Toronto, you’d be forgiven for not knowing what it is), it’s basically like regular ice cream, but made more luxurious and creamy with the addition of egg yolks.

Woodfire serves chocolate, vanilla, and a rotating feature flavour.  You can also add a variety of optional toppings.  I just got plain vanilla so I could bask in the sweet, sweet, custardy glory without anything getting in the way.

It’s good.  It’s not quite as tasty as basically any frozen custard I’ve had in the States, but it’s legit.  It’s got a pronounced custardy flavour and a satisfyingly silky texture.  It could be creamier, and eating it gets a bit one-note sweet after a while, but all things considered, I enjoyed it.

Hey, beggars can’t be choosers.  It’s frozen custard and it doesn’t require that I drive hundreds of kilometres to the States.  I’ll take it.

Solid Ice Cream at Put A Cone On It

Ice cream is the best.  And while what they’re serving at Put A Cone On It probably isn’t going to knock anyone’s socks off, it’s above average ice cream.  Which means that, yes: it’s the best.

Plus, they make their own ice cream, which is always nice.  There’s nothing more disheartening than going to an ice cream shop only to realize that they’re serving commercial stuff like Kawartha or Nestle.  I can buy that at the supermarket.  Get out of here with that.

They have a handful of dairy and non-dairy flavours available; I tried the roasted banana, which is one of the dairy options.

It’s quite tasty.  True to its name, it has a very pronounced banana flavour that almost reminded me of banana bread, only with a more amplified fruity flavour.

The texture was ever-so-slightly icy, and it could have been richer, but it was quite good.  Like I said: it probably won’t be your favourite ice cream in the city, but you’re definitely going to enjoy eating it.

Flin Flan at Bang Bang

Well, I guess it’s time for my semi-regular “here’s another amazing flavour you need to try at Bang Bang” post, because I just tried a flavour called Flin Flan, and it was amazing and you need to try it.

They describe it as “eggy custard Filipino style.”  If you’ve never had flan, it’s essentially a Spanish (or Filipino) version of creme caramel.  And if you’ve never had creme caramel, what’s your deal?  That’s a classic dessert.  Get it together.

As you’d expect, the ice cream version of it at Bang Bang is delicious, because everything at Bang Bang is delicious.

The ice cream itself has a really great custardy flavour (and it goes without saying that it’s incredibly creamy and rich).  It’s topped with a very intense caramel sauce that has a flavour that’s right on the verge of being burnt.  It’s so great.

There’s also a piece of crunchy sugar on top that’s maybe a bit too substantial, but otherwise has the same rich flavour as the sauce.  I know it’s cold out, so maybe you don’t feel like eating ice cream, but this is too delicious to pass up.
