Dipped Donuts serves some of the best doughnuts in the city.  The best?  Quite possibly!  I’ve written about their Kensington Market location a few times, and I’m happy to say that their second location on Queen is just as good (UPDATE: since I initially wrote this, this location has closed (I have a bit of  a backlog), but their initial location in Kensington Market is still alive and kicking).

Dipped Donuts

As usual, every flavour looked extremely delicious.  Picking just one was an ordeal.

I went with peach & ginger jelly, which is an intriguing combo that worked out even better than I was expecting.

Dipped Donuts

It’s a great doughnut.  The filling is sweet, but with a mild tartness that helps to balance things out.  And the ginger is present enough to give the filling some character and a mild bite, but subtle enough to not overwhelm.  I’ve had some ginger desserts where the ginger is too aggressive, and let me tell you: it’s a bummer to eat.

And, of course, the doughnut itself is perfect, with a great flavour and just the right balance of chewiness and fluffiness.

Another Delicious Doughnut at Dipped Donuts

It’s been a few years since I’ve been to Dipped Donuts, and I figured another visit was probably in order.  Every other doughnut I’ve had from this place has been great, and hey, guess what?  It’s still great.

Dipped Donuts

I’m a big fan of the flavours here, which manage to be unique without ever coming off as gimicky.  Whoever’s coming up with the doughnuts clearly knows what they’re doing.

On this visit I got the saffron pistachio: “filled with pistachio pastry cream and topped with rich saffron glaze, pistachios and rose petals.”

Dipped Donuts

It’s so good; the pistachio filling is creamy and packed with pistachio flavour (and it tastes like real pistachio, not pistachio extract), and the glaze gives it a really nice floral hum that complements the nuttiness perfectly.  It’s sweet, but doesn’t punch you in the face like so many doughnuts do.  It’s great.

And of course, the doughnut itself is as tasty as ever.  Is Dipped Donuts the best doughnut shop in the city?  It might be.

A Delicious Apple Fritter at Dipped Donuts

I almost didn’t order the apple fritter at Dipped Donuts.  Sanremo — an amazing Italian bakery in Etobicoke — sells an apple fritter that’s so delicious, getting one anywhere else feels like a waste of time.  How can you top it?

Well, I’m not sure if Dipped Donuts quite tops it, but it’s pretty damn close.  Their fritter is absolutely amazing.

Dipped Donuts

It’s got the perfect balance of crispy, chewy, and fluffy.  It’s sweet but not too sweet, with the rich glaze balancing perfectly with the cinnamony, apple-infused pastry.

It’s easily the best doughnut I’ve had from Dipped Donuts — and everything I’ve had from that particular shop has been extremely delicious.  It’s ridiculously good.

Carrot Cake Doughnut at Dipped Donuts

Dipped Donuts: still great.  I tried the blueberry basil doughnut from this place last year, and it was seriously tasty.

The one I just had — the carrot cake — might have been even better.  It’s outstanding.

Dipped Donuts

It’s a raised doughnut topped with cream cheese frosting, carrot cake chunks, candied walnuts and ginger, and a caramel drizzle.

It’s definitely sweeter than the last doughnut I tried, but it was just right.  The frosting was gooey and satisfying, and the chunks of cake were seriously tasty.  The nuts and the ginger amps up the flavour, and the caramel?  Come on.  It’s indulgent and amazing.

And of course, the doughnut itself was just as good as I remembered, with a nicely substantial texture and a great flavour.  It’s a top-shelf doughnut.

Tasty and Unique Flavours at Dipped Donuts

Though Dipped Donuts has been serving their tasty treats at various events throughout the city for a few years, they’ve only just recently opened a permanent outpost in Kensington Market.

They keep things pretty simple; as far as I can tell, they only serve classic raised doughnuts — nothing with a cakey base, and on the day I visited, nothing filled (though they do have filled doughnuts in their rotation).

Their menu mostly consists of quirky flavours like rosewater pistachio, mango ginger, and London fog.

Dipped Donuts

I tried the blueberry basil, and yeah, it’s good. The doughnut itself is a little bit more dense and chewy than the norm, which is actually quite satisfying.

The glaze was seriously delicious, though I’ll admit that I couldn’t taste any basil flavour.  It was bright and fruity, with a mild tartness and a pronounced blueberry flavour.  It’s also admirably restrained in its sweetness; it’s basically the polar opposite of the in-your-face sugar bombs you’ll find at Krispy Kreme.

Most of the time, I’m ready to tap out from the sweetness after one doughnut.  Here, I could have happily eaten another one (or two).
