Quick Bites: Doraji, Chica’s, Maman

I tried the bibimbap here during the media night at the Well, and quite enjoyed it.  Well, I just tried it again — spicy pork this time (bulgogi beef, chicken, fried tofu, and vegetarian are also options) — and again, I quite enjoyed it.  It’s a very classic bowl of bibimbap, executed perfectly.  I honestly don’t have much more to say about it than that.  If you like bibimbap, it’s a great version of that dish.  And if you don’t, what is wrong with you??

While Chica’s days of being the mind-blowing, thigh-slapping best fried chicken that you’ve ever had are long gone, it’s still quite good.  For some reason, I hadn’t tried their Hot Honey sandwich until now, and yeah, it’s predictably delicious.  Most things at Chica’s tend to be a bit sweeter than I’d like, so I probably shouldn’t be surprised that their version of hot honey is more honey, less hot.  A bit more acidity and heat would really help round out the sweetness, but it’s still quite tasty for what it is.  And as always, the chicken itself features a great balance between the crispy exterior and juicy interior.

Maman is an NYC bakery chain that opened a location in Toronto a few years ago.  They have a whole bunch of sandwiches and pastries on the menu, but I heard that the chocolate chip cookie is the thing to get.  And yeah, it’s tasty.  Nothing about it knocked my socks off, but it’s clearly an above average cookie.  My only real issue is the sugar they sprinkle on top; it’s a neat idea in theory (I’m assuming the idea is to give you a crispy, slightly caramelized top), but in practice it just gives the cookie a slightly grainy texture.  I still quite enjoyed the cookie (and it wasn’t too sweet, despite the sprinkling of sugar), but that was a shame.

Quick Bites: Crumbl, Tom’s Dairy Freeze, Lola’s

Crumbl is an American cookie chain that opened in Mississauga earlier last year with a ton of hype.  I actually tried to go around when they opened, and the line was so intense that I wound up skipping it altogether.  Things have calmed down quite a bit (the place was empty on my recent visit), so I was finally able to try the chocolate chip cookie (they have a rotating menu of six cookies, but the chocolate chip is what made them famous).  The cookie seemed like it should have been pretty decent; it’s not too sweet, and it’s clearly made with good quality chocolate.  But the cookie was way, way underbaked, with a pronounced raw flour flavour and a middle that was more gummy than chewy.  I’m assuming this was partially on purpose, to create a softer cookie, but they clearly went a bit too far (it probably doesn’t help that the cookie is enormous, which makes it harder to underbake without having a fully raw middle).

I should note that I originally wrote this a few months ago (I have a bit of a backlog).  I recently tried Crumbl’s second location in Mississauga, around Dixie and Dundas, hoping that the first cookie was just a mistake — surely it’s not supposed to be that underbaked?  I had the exact same experience.  I also overheard a family in line raving about how much they love the cookies here, so clearly this place has its fans.  I am not one of them.

I just checked — this will be my seventh time featuring Tom’s Dairy Freeze on this blog, and you know what?  I regret nothing.  The place continues to serve the city’s best soft serve, so why shouldn’t I write about it on a semi-regular basis?  It’s my duty.  I got the strawberry sundae on this particular visit, and it was, of course, delicious.  I find the sauces here tend not to be nearly as good as the ice cream itself, but this one was great — in particular, the huge chunks of strawberry complemented the creamy ice cream perfectly.

Speaking of amazing ice cream, every time I check out Lola’s, I’m like “is this the best gelato in the city??”  Certainly, they’re neck-and-neck with Mizzica (Nani’s used to be a contender, but my last few visits have been surprisingly poor).  I got plain old chocolate on this particular visit, and while it was maybe a touch too sweet, it had a great chocolate flavour and the texture was perfect: super rich and creamy, and served at the right temperature (e.g. not as hard as a brick).

It’s hard to go wrong with a good chocolate chip (or chocolate chunk in this case) cookie.  Done well, it’s one of the greatest things ever.  Done badly, it’s still pretty damn good.

Seriously: think about all of the chocolate chip cookies you’ve eaten in your lifetime.  Have you ever had one that wasn’t, at the very least, pretty good?  I’ll bet you haven’t!  It’s so simple, and it’s very hard to outright mess up.

I know this all kind of sounds like a preamble to me saying “well they’ve finally messed it up!” but no, that is absolutely, positively not the case.  The chocolate chunk cookie at Courage Cookies?  Delicious.

I mean, it’s got great quality chocolate, a nice crispy/chewy balance, and a satisfying brown sugary flavour to round it all out.  How can you go wrong there?  It’s also topped with a good amount flaky salt; I know not everyone is crazy about this, but I like the balance of sweet and salty that this brings, and the way that it helps cut the sugariness of the cookie.  It’s very good.

I mean, come on: if you go the whole summer without going to Tom’s Dairy Freeze at least once, was it really the summer?  I submit that it was not.  It’s certainly not the most exciting ice cream joint in the city, but they’ve been pumping out consistently great no-frills soft serve for decades, and it’s a million times better than the stuff you’ll find at chains like Dairy Queen or McDonald’s.  On this particular visit I got a sundae with chocolate ice cream and cherry sauce, and yeah, that’s a great combo.  The sauce is excessively sweet (it tastes like maraschino cherries in a thick syrup), but then that’s kind of the charm of a place like this.

I’ve mentioned before that Soma serves some of the best gelato in the city, and yeah, it’s still top notch.  I recently tried roasted almond and Sicilian pistachio, and both flavours were rich, creamy, and deeply flavourful.

Malai Kulfi and Mango Chocolate Chip at Nani’s

I don’t think I need to spend more time on this blog on the greatness of Nani’s Gelato.  I’ve thoroughly covered that.  So I’ll just say that on a recent visit I tried malai kulfi and mango chocolate chip, and both flavours were unsurprisingly fantastic.  Malai kulfi, in particular, had that perfect Nani’s balance of a unique flavour and amazingly creamy gelato.  As for mango chocolate chip, I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical about the combo of mango and chocolate, and… to be honest, I’m still skeptical.  But the mango ice cream was so delicious that I thoroughly enjoyed it, despite the flavours not working particularly well together.
