Delicious Butter Tarts at Circles and Squares

After hearing that Circles and Squares had been awarded first prize at Ontario’s Best Butter Tart Festival last year, my first thought was — wait, there’s a butter tart festival?  My second thought was that I’ve gotta try those tarts.

Circles and Squares actually won two awards: first place in the best traditional butter tart category, and second place in the best “wild-style” butter tart category (for their Snickers butter tart, which features chocolate and peanut butter).

Circles and Squares

I tried the traditional butter tart both with and without pecans, the Snickers butter tart, and the double chocolate butter tart.

They were all very good, but the traditional ones were the clear winners.  I can see why they won first place — they’re gooey but not too gooey, the flavour is rich and sweet without being cloying, and the crust is fantastic.  It’s a top notch butter tart.

Circles and Squares

The other two were tasty, but all the stuff took away from their butter tartiness.  They tasted more like little chocolate pies that were slightly too sweet.  They were still delicious, mind you, but they couldn’t help but be a bit disappointing next to the amazing traditional tarts.

Tasty Vegan Doughnuts at Bloomer’s

Every time I go to a vegan bakery, or a vegan ice cream shop, or a vegan [insert dessert that absolutely should not be vegan here], I think, well, this is going to be bad.  And then, more often than not, it’s not bad!

Bloomer's

(Though nothing will ever surprise me more than the deliciousness of the the vegan ice cream at Honey’s.  It’s ice cream.  Ice cream.  How is a vegan version that creamy??  It’s sorcery.)

Bloomer's

I just tried the rose pistachio doughnut at Bloomer’s, a popular vegan doughnut shop with several locations around the GTA, and I was surprised by how good it was.  You’d never guess it was vegan if someone gave it to you blind.

Bloomer's

It’s maybe a touch too sweet, but the pistachio/rosewater combination is thoroughly delicious (and the rosewater flavour is more pronounced than you’d think).

The doughnut itself is top notch — it’s not too airy or too dense, with a nice chewiness that doesn’t overwhelm.  I wish it had a bit more of a yeasty flavour, but that’s a relatively minor complaint.

Great Taiyaki at Red Bean Waffle House

Note: It looks like this place has closed down between me writing and posting this.  Highly unfortunate!

The Red Bean Waffle House in Thornhill sells various cakes and savoury snacks, but they specialize in taiyaki — fish-shaped waffles that come stuffed with either red bean or custard.

Red Bean Waffle House

I’m sure the custard is good, but come on — it’s right there in the name.  You’ve gotta get the red bean.

The red bean filling here is actually slightly different than the usual.  Its texture is creamier, and it tastes like maybe they’ve mixed in some custard with the red bean.  I’m not sure if that’s actually the case, but whatever they’re doing, it’s quite tasty.  It also has a satisfyingly restrained level of sweetness.

The waffle part, too, is a bit different from the usual: it’s slightly thinner and crispier, which works quite well with the creamy filling.  It’s a very satisfying dessert.

An Amazing Croissant at La La Bakeshop

La La Bakeshop is a thoroughly delightful bakery that melds French and Vietnamese flavours, mostly through its assortment of Asian-inspired croissants (though they do have several other cakes and desserts, and everything looked great).

I went with the condensed milk croissant, which certainly isn’t a taste combo that I would have thought of.  But oh man.  It was insanely delicious.

An Amazing Croissant at La La Bakeshop

Mostly, it’s the croissant.  There are roughly a billion bakeries in the GTA where you can find a croissant, but most of them aren’t much better than okay.  Frequently, the texture isn’t quite right, or they’re not buttery enough, or they’re not fresh enough, or they’re just… not good.

An Amazing Croissant at La La Bakeshop

The croissant here was remarkable.  Perfect texture — it’s super flaky and crispy, with just the right level of tenderness and heft on its interior.  Great buttery flavour.  Legitimately one of the best croissants I’ve had in the GTA.

An Amazing Croissant at La La Bakeshop

It’s filled with a pretty generous amount of gooey, oozy condensed milk, and you’d think it would be too sweet, but somehow, it isn’t.  The croissant and the condensed milk work so well together that I’m shocked I’ve never seen this combination before.  It would be a tasty combo with even a lesser croissant, but with a croissant of this quality?  It’s a contender for the best pastry in the GTA.

Delicious Pizza (and Coconut Cream Pie) at The Fourth Man in the Fire

The last time I tried the Fourth Man in the Fire, I thought it was very good, but probably just short of greatness.  I may have been wrong about that; I just had another slice, and I don’t think there was anything holding it back from greatness.  It’s there.

The Fourth Man in the Fire

I had a slice of the margherita, and it was seriously good.  It’s cheesier than you might expect, but the balance of rich cheese and zippy sauce was just right.  They also chop the basil and sprinkle it all over the slice instead of using whole leaves, and I actually think that’s the way to go.  You get the flavour of the basil throughout, instead of just in a few mouthfuls.

The Fourth Man in the Fire

On my last visit I found the crust to be slightly lacking in substance, but that wasn’t an issue this time.  It’s got a good chew to it, a nice flavour, it’s perfectly charred, and it has a great balance of crispy interior and fluffy interior.  The pizza is quite generously topped, but the crust has a enough substance to it to hold up perfectly.

The Fourth Man in the Fire

I had to try the coconut cream pie after reading this article, and yeah, it’s delicious, too.  It’s super rich and creamy, and has a really nice toasted coconut flavour.  It’s one of the better slices of coconut cream pie I’ve had in quite a while, though it’s also extremely pricey at 13 bucks.  They say it’s meant to be shared, and it is indeed very heavy, but it’s also a pretty standard size for slice of pie.  It’s very, very delicious, so it’s hard to complain too much, but yowza that’s a lot for a slice of pie.
