Delicious Dessert at Soul Chocolate

Soul Chocolate is a delightful chocolate shop and cafe where they make their own chocolate, not to mention a bunch of tasty desserts.  They used to have a much smaller location on Gerrard, but have since moved to an industrial area nearby.

I tried a small chocolate bar and one of the desserts, and both were stellar.

They have a variety of dark chocolate bars made with cocoa from different countries; I went with the Dominican 70%, and it was actually pretty amazing.  It’s about five bucks for a 25 gram bar, which is not cheap, but you know what?  You get what you pay for.  If you compare this to better mass-produced dark chocolate like Lindt, the difference is night and day.  The chocolate here has so much more going on.

I also tried a slice of the chocolate pie, which might have the most intense chocolate flavour of any dessert I’ve ever had; it’s great.  It’s ultra rich and fudgy, with an in-your-face dark chocolate / coffee flavour that’s really satisfying.   The crust is made with sourdough, and it’s got a mild tang that works nicely with the deep chocolatiness.  It’s a delicious dessert.

Tasty Dark Chocolate Ice Cream at Bang Bang

Bang Bang is a bit less exciting these days; they have a pretty set selection of permanent and rotating flavours, and once you’ve tried them all, you’ve tried them all.  The early, more experimental days where there were always at least a couple of odd new flavours to try are, sadly, long gone.  I can’t remember the last time I saw something new on their menu.

The quality is still fantastic, however.  I had the WTF2 on my most recent visit (“a smooth dark chocolate, 70% callebaut chip”), and holy moly it’s good.  Super creamy, intense chocolately flavour, good level of sweetness, and the chocolate pieces are thin enough that they still melt in your mouth (a lot of chocolate in ice cream tends to have that issue where it’s so cold that it’s mostly just crunchy with no real flavour).

New places like Good Behaviour are giving Bang Bang a run for their money, but it’s clear that Bang Bang still knows how to make a primo scoop.  They’re also, as you can tell from the photo above, still doing quite well, which is nice to see.

Tasty Gelato at Soma Chocolatemaker

I mentioned recently that Hollywood Gelato is a strong contender for my favourite gelato in the city.  Also on that list?  Soma Chocolatemaker.  You wouldn’t think that a place that makes great chocolate would also make great gelato, but hey, why not?  They also sell some pretty tasty cookies, so I guess they’re just great at everything.

Soma Chocolatemaker

I got the dark chocolate gelato, and as you’d expect from a place with the word “chocolate” in their name, the flavour was outstanding.  It had a deep, rich chocolate flavour with a perfect balance of sweetness.  The creamy, almost fudgey texture was deeply satisfying.

I’d be surprised if there were a better scoop of chocolate gelato in the city.
