Delicious Dessert at Soul Chocolate

Soul Chocolate is a delightful chocolate shop and cafe where they make their own chocolate, not to mention a bunch of tasty desserts.  They used to have a much smaller location on Gerrard, but have since moved to an industrial area nearby.

I tried a small chocolate bar and one of the desserts, and both were stellar.

They have a variety of dark chocolate bars made with cocoa from different countries; I went with the Dominican 70%, and it was actually pretty amazing.  It’s about five bucks for a 25 gram bar, which is not cheap, but you know what?  You get what you pay for.  If you compare this to better mass-produced dark chocolate like Lindt, the difference is night and day.  The chocolate here has so much more going on.

I also tried a slice of the chocolate pie, which might have the most intense chocolate flavour of any dessert I’ve ever had; it’s great.  It’s ultra rich and fudgy, with an in-your-face dark chocolate / coffee flavour that’s really satisfying.   The crust is made with sourdough, and it’s got a mild tang that works nicely with the deep chocolatiness.  It’s a delicious dessert.

Maverick’s is an Ottawa-based doughnut chain that opened their first location in Toronto last year.  You might be thinking that we have enough doughnut joints in the city, but you’re wrong and here’s why: Maverick’s specializes in cake-based doughnuts.  Most doughnut places will have a cake doughnut or two on the menu, but here it’s pretty much all of them.

I tried six: cherry glazed, pecan pie, maple bacon, double chocolate, lemon ricotta, and chocolate coconut.

They were all quite delightful.  The cake is dense but not too dense, they’re not overly sweet (aside from maybe the maple bacon, which I still quite enjoyed), and they have a light crispiness on their exterior.  They’re top quality doughnuts.

And the flavours were all great, though if I had to pick a favourite, it might be the nutty pecan pie.  Or the double chocolate, which had a really satisfying chocolate flavour.  Or the cherry glazed, which tasted like a doughnut and a maraschino cherry had a baby.  Or the lemon ricotta, which had a nice tartness and a satisfying creaminess.  Or the maple bacon, which had satisfying pops of saltiness from the bacon to offset the sweetness of the maple.  Or the chocolate coconut, which is always a tasty combo.

Oh, I just named all the doughnuts, didn’t I.  Well you know what?  I liked all of them.  They’re all my favourite.  Deal with it.

Delicious Butter Tarts at Circles and Squares

After hearing that Circles and Squares had been awarded first prize at Ontario’s Best Butter Tart Festival last year, my first thought was — wait, there’s a butter tart festival?  My second thought was that I’ve gotta try those tarts.

Circles and Squares actually won two awards: first place in the best traditional butter tart category, and second place in the best “wild-style” butter tart category (for their Snickers butter tart, which features chocolate and peanut butter).

I tried the traditional butter tart both with and without pecans, the Snickers butter tart, and the double chocolate butter tart.

They were all very good, but the traditional ones were the clear winners.  I can see why they won first place — they’re gooey but not too gooey, the flavour is rich and sweet without being cloying, and the crust is fantastic.  It’s a top notch butter tart.

Circles and Squares

The other two were tasty, but all the stuff took away from their butter tartiness.  They tasted more like little chocolate pies that were slightly too sweet.  They were still delicious, mind you, but they couldn’t help but be a bit disappointing next to the amazing traditional tarts.

Better Days Coffee & Donuts is a delightful new doughnut shop on Dovercourt, and you know what?  I’m not going to beat around the bush.  The apple fritter here is the best I’ve ever had.

Better Days is inspired by the classics, with the owner telling Toronto Life that they won’t have any “stunt doughnuts” (i.e. social-media-friendly creations with elaborate toppings) on the menu.  I enjoy a good stunt doughnut every now and then, but you can’t beat the classics.

And it doesn’t get more classic than an apple fritter, which is unbelievably good here.  Again: it’s the best apple fritter I’ve ever had.

It’s just the perfect combo of a crispy/craggly exterior and a moist interior with enjoyably tender apple chunks interspersed throughout.  It covered in a sweet glaze, but it’s never cloying, with a delicious balance of sweetness that feels just right.  I could eat about a million of these.  Strap me down into one of those Homer Simpson doughnut force-feeding machines, please.

I also tried the double chocolate, which was a delicious cake doughnut with a satisfying chocolatey punch.  Nothing can compare to that glorious fritter, but it’s still clearly above average.

A Delicious Almond Croissant at Castle and Coal

I have a hard time saying no to an almond croissant.  There’s something about the combo of a crispy, fluffy, buttery croissant with the creamy, sweet almond paste that’s kind of magical.

The version of Castle and Coal also has chocolate in it (it’s basically a cross between a traditional almond croissant and a pain au chocolate), and sure, why not?  Add chocolate to every dessert.  I have a hard time thinking of a dessert that wouldn’t be enhanced by adding chocolate.

The croissant itself doesn’t quite have the level of exterior crispiness that you’re hoping for, but it’s otherwise right where you want it to be.  The very generous amount of almond paste almost borders on too sweet, but never crosses that line (and the addition of dark chocolate, aside from complementing it quite well, does a good job of balancing out the sweetness of the filling).
