Tasty Noodle Soup at Tokasu Ramen Laksa Bar

Tokasu specializes in ramen and laksa, which strikes me as a bit of an odd combo.  I mean, I guess they are both noodle soups, but the resemblance kinda ends there.  Still, they’re both delightful, so why not?

Tokasu Ramen Laksa Bar

I ordered the laksa, since it’s quite a bit harder to find in the GTA.  They actually have six different varieties of the dish; I went with the chicken white santan laksa, which they describe as their “signature laksa bowl featuring a fragrant coconut chicken broth, shredded chicken, tofu puffs, bean sprouts, and noodles.”

It’s quite good.  The broth doesn’t quite have the complexity of the best versions of the dish, but it’s nice and creamy, with a zingy tanginess that helps to cut through its richness.

The noodles were a bit on the soft side, but the chicken (which comes sliced rather than shredded) is nice and tender and the tofu puffs do a great job of soaking up the broth.

It might not be the best I’ve ever had, but it’s a solid bowl of laksa.  I’ll definitely have to come back to try the ramen.

Great Shawarma at Tahini’s

Tahini's
Location
: 347 King Street West, Toronto

Tahini’s is a shawarma chain with around a dozen locations peppered throughout the GTA, so I’ll admit that my expectations were not super high.  Still, I figured I’d give it a shot.

Tahini's

I ordered the chicken shawarma wrap, which comes in three different configurations: original, old school, and authentic.  I went with original (“garlic, tahini, pickles, tomatoes, pomegranate molasses, parsley”).

I was shocked at how much I enjoyed this.

Tahini's

Everything here is just where you want it to be: the chicken is juicy and has a decent amount of crispy bits, the proportion of toppings to meat is just right, and the sauces (which are very generously applied) are quite tasty.  In particular, the addition of pomegranate molasses is kind of ingenious, as it gives the wrap a zippy brightness that helps to cut through its richness.

And the wrap (saj, I think?) is nicely toasted, giving it a nice balance between its lightly crispy exterior and chewy interior.

Tahini's

In my experience, once a restaurant opens more than two or three locations, the quality starts to take a nosedive, so the fact that Tahini’s is this delicious is a very pleasant surprise.

Tasty Burritos at Bolets Burrito

Pretty much any time the topic of the best burrito in Toronto comes up on the Toronto food subreddit, Bolets is mentioned.  I finally got around to it recently, and yeah: it’s quite good.

Bolets Burrito

They have a handful of meat options (including some esoteric choices like Buffalo chicken and sweet spicy Thai), but the steak seems t o be the one they’re most known for, so that’s what I got.

The burrito comes crammed with steak, along with the usual assortment of rice, beans, and veggies.

Bolets Burrito

The steak is tender, plentiful, and very well seasoned, and the proportion of meat to veggies to sauce is spot on.  I asked for it hot, and while it’s not exactly going to blow your head off, it’s got a good kick.  There were a couple of inedible gristly bits in the steak, which was unfortunate, but otherwise I really enjoyed this.

Bolets Burrito

Is it the best burrito in the city?  I don’t know, but it’s probably a contender.

Roasted Garlic Chicken Sandwich at Popeyes

I’m pretty sure the Roasted Garlic Chicken Sandwich from Popeyes is the garlickiest thing I’ve ever eaten at a fast food joint.  Possibly the garlickiest thing I’ve ever eaten, period?  It’s up there, that’s for sure.

Here’s how Popeyes describes it: “Our classic marinated chicken fillet, that’s battered and breaded in our signature buttermilk coating and then fried up hot and crispy. Served on a butter toasted brioche bun with our ‘New’ sweet and tangy, Roasted Garlic aioli and topped with nutty Havarti cheese and crisp leaf lettuce.”

It basically tastes like they took an entire head of roasted garlic, salted it aggressively (it’s an incredibly salty sandwich), and then mashed it onto a piece of fried chicken.  It’s intense.

It’s possible that something went wrong with the batch in my sandwich, because the description above says that it’s “sweet and tangy,” and I detected absolutely no sweetness or tanginess in my sandwich.  Just a pure, unadulterated face-punch of garlic and salt.

Some sweetness or tanginess actually would have been very appreciated as a counterpoint to the other flavours here — it’s a bit one note (putting it kindly).  But as someone who quite likes roasted garlic, I still mostly enjoyed this.  If you’re on the fence about that flavour, however, stay far, far away.

As for the chicken itself, it’s a pretty standard fast food fried chicken patty — it’s vaguely dry and kinda generic, but it’ll get the job done.  The lettuce and cheese are completely overwhelmed by the garlic sauce, and the bun (which actually does have a little bit of sweetness, though not enough to make any real impact) is fine.

Tasty Desserts at Bakerbots Baking

Bakerbots is affiliated with Bang Bang, which serves some of the best ice cream in the city (I’ve written about Bang Bang roughly a billion times on this blog, and while it’s been a while, they’re still great).  So, of course, it’s a top-notch bakery.

They used to be in a teeny-tiny location that was about the size of a generous walk-in closet, but have since moved to a much larger spot on Bloor (they even have a few seats!).

I think the assortment of desserts might be slightly larger than before, but it’s also possible they’re just more spread out now.  Either way, they have a very tempting variety of cakes, cookies, pies, and other tasty stuff.

I ordered the key lime puff, which features a choux pastry stuffed with whipped cream and key lime pie filling, topped with Italian meringue.

It’s hard for me to not compare a pastry like this to the amazing Choux Lab, and no, it’s not as good as that — but it’s close!

Bakerbots Baking

The key lime filling is nicely tart and very creamy.  I’m not sure if this needs both whipped cream and meringue, which I think dilutes the lime flavour a bit too much, but that’s a minor complaint.  The filling is delicious, and the nicely crisp choux pastry complements it well.
