All restaurants are Italian sandwich shops now.  Don’t like it?  Sorry, them’s the breaks.

But you know what?  Based on the quality of places like this and Alfie’s, I for one welcome our new Italian sandwich overlords.

Vero Italian Sandwich Co.

They have a handful of meaty sandwiches on the menu (and one vegetarian).  I went with the Gabagool: “Capicola, Mortadella, Fresh Mozzarella, Giardiniera, Tomato and Arugula.”

Yeah, that’s a top-notch sandwich.  The bread is great (it’s got a nice balance of chewiness and crispiness), there’s a generous amount of good quality cold cuts, it’s nice and zippy, and the fresh mozzarella adds a nice creaminess that rounds things out.

It was a little greasy (it was dripping with oil) and the flavours don’t quite pop like in the best versions of this type of sandwich, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit.

I should note that this place is actually inside Woofdawg Hotdog in Kensington Market, so if you’re looking for Frank Ranalli’s signage, you won’t find it.

They serve Chicago-style Italian beef sandwiches here, which you can get topped with sweet or hot peppers.

This style of sandwich consists of a hearty amount of thinly-sliced roast beef topped with giardiniera (pickled veggies) and, since I ordered the spicy version, hot peppers.  The thing that makes an Italian beef sandwich stand out is the fact that the bread is given a quick dunk in a beefy au jus sauce.  It’s a sandwich that pretty much cannot be dry by default.  It’s delightful.

They also serve this type of sandwich nearby at Marq’s Chicago Beef, and I’ll admit that I liked that one a bit better (it has a more satisfying beefy flavour), but the sandwich here was still thoroughly delicious.

If you’re looking for a tasty, beefy sandwich, look no further: you’ve found it.  Go to Marq’s and thank me later.

As the name implies, Marq’s serves Chicago-style Italian beef sandwiches, which features a whole bunch of roast beef on a French roll, served with a beefy au jus sauce (which, unlike a French dip, is incorporated right into the sandwich).

The sandwich is served as saucy as you like it: either juiced, dipped, or dunked, with dipped being the default level.  You can further customize your sandwich with giardiniera (spicy pickled veggies) or sweet peppers, or if you want to really live it up, both.

I got the sandwich dipped with both, and it was extremely tasty.  It’s exactly what you want it to be — the beef has a great flavour, it’s super tender, and the sauce-soaked bread is the perfect vehicle.  That’s not to mention the zingy giardiniera, which does a great job of adding some brightness to the very heavy sandwich.

There’s not much else to say about it — it’s a great sandwich.  There’s a whole lot I liked about it, and nothing that I didn’t.
