I’m not sure how many fast food burgers and/or sandwiches I’ve eaten in my lifetime, but it’s a lot.  Hundreds?  Thousands??  Okay, probably not thousands, but the number is in the upper hundreds, certainly.

All that is to say that it means something when I make this statement: the Pickle Glaze Chicken Sandwich from Popeyes might be the worst fast food sandwich I’ve ever had.

Here’s how Popeyes describes it: “Our classic chicken breast fillet in a tangy, sweet dill pickle glaze with Louisiana herbs and seasonings, hand-battered and fried to golden brown perfection topped with barrel cured pickle slices.”

It was clear something was amiss as soon as I opened the bag; the smell of dill was immediate and overpowering.

I’m going to be generous and assume that something went wrong with the pickle glaze in my sandwich, because I cannot imagine that anyone would think what I was served should be fed to human beings.  It must have been a mistake.  I need to believe it was a mistake.  But hey, I was served what I was served.  Obviously I’m going to write about it.  I need my sacrifice to mean something.

The flavour was acrid and off-putting.  It tasted like someone in a lab took the flavour of dill, did a mediocre job of replicating it, and then multiplied it by a million.

It tasted like they took the amount of concentrated dill flavouring meant for a hundred sandwiches and dumped it into one.

It tasted like something that isn’t meant for consumption, like trying to swig a bottle of perfume.  Every time I took a bite, I was like “I don’t want to be eating this! I should stop!”  But I was on my lunch break from work and didn’t have any other food, and what was I going to do, throw it out and buy a second lunch??  What do I look like, Jeff Bezos???

The sad part is that the rest of the sandwich was actually pretty good.  The bun was nice and fresh, and the chicken featured a satisfying balance between the crunchy exterior and the relatively juicy meat within.  I had another fried chicken sandwich from Popeyes pretty recently, and this one was much better.

That flavour, though.  It’ll haunt my dreams.

Quick Bites: Doraji, Chica’s, Maman

Bibimbap from Doraji at the Well

I tried the bibimbap here during the media night at the Well, and quite enjoyed it.  Well, I just tried it again — spicy pork this time (bulgogi beef, chicken, fried tofu, and vegetarian are also options) — and again, I quite enjoyed it.  It’s a very classic bowl of bibimbap, executed perfectly.  I honestly don’t have much more to say about it than that.  If you like bibimbap, it’s a great version of that dish.  And if you don’t, what is wrong with you??

While Chica’s days of being the mind-blowing, thigh-slapping best fried chicken that you’ve ever had are long gone, it’s still quite good.  For some reason, I hadn’t tried their Hot Honey sandwich until now, and yeah, it’s predictably delicious.  Most things at Chica’s tend to be a bit sweeter than I’d like, so I probably shouldn’t be surprised that their version of hot honey is more honey, less hot.  A bit more acidity and heat would really help round out the sweetness, but it’s still quite tasty for what it is.  And as always, the chicken itself features a great balance between the crispy exterior and juicy interior.

Maman is an NYC bakery chain that opened a location in Toronto a few years ago.  They have a whole bunch of sandwiches and pastries on the menu, but I heard that the chocolate chip cookie is the thing to get.  And yeah, it’s tasty.  Nothing about it knocked my socks off, but it’s clearly an above average cookie.  My only real issue is the sugar they sprinkle on top; it’s a neat idea in theory (I’m assuming the idea is to give you a crispy, slightly caramelized top), but in practice it just gives the cookie a slightly grainy texture.  I still quite enjoyed the cookie (and it wasn’t too sweet, despite the sprinkling of sugar), but that was a shame.

I’m pretty sure the Roasted Garlic Chicken Sandwich from Popeyes is the garlickiest thing I’ve ever eaten at a fast food joint.  Possibly the garlickiest thing I’ve ever eaten, period?  It’s up there, that’s for sure.

Here’s how Popeyes describes it: “Our classic marinated chicken fillet, that’s battered and breaded in our signature buttermilk coating and then fried up hot and crispy. Served on a butter toasted brioche bun with our ‘New’ sweet and tangy, Roasted Garlic aioli and topped with nutty Havarti cheese and crisp leaf lettuce.”

It basically tastes like they took an entire head of roasted garlic, salted it aggressively (it’s an incredibly salty sandwich), and then mashed it onto a piece of fried chicken.  It’s intense.

It’s possible that something went wrong with the batch in my sandwich, because the description above says that it’s “sweet and tangy,” and I detected absolutely no sweetness or tanginess in my sandwich.  Just a pure, unadulterated face-punch of garlic and salt.

Some sweetness or tanginess actually would have been very appreciated as a counterpoint to the other flavours here — it’s a bit one note (putting it kindly).  But as someone who quite likes roasted garlic, I still mostly enjoyed this.  If you’re on the fence about that flavour, however, stay far, far away.

As for the chicken itself, it’s a pretty standard fast food fried chicken patty — it’s vaguely dry and kinda generic, but it’ll get the job done.  The lettuce and cheese are completely overwhelmed by the garlic sauce, and the bun (which actually does have a little bit of sweetness, though not enough to make any real impact) is fine.

I mentioned recently that KFC has really been leaning into wacky novelty items of late, which I quite enjoy.  Mike’s Hot Honey Sandwich, on the other hand?  Pretty standard stuff.  It’s just a generic fried chicken sandwich that’s a little bit sweet.

Not the most exciting thing ever, but I guess they can’t all be delightfully weird.

The sandwich, as per KFC’s website: “The Mike’s Hot Honey® Sandwich features our triple-breaded chicken and is topped with signature Mike’s Hot Honey® – crafted from 100% pure honey and chili peppers. It’s also topped with crispy jalapenos for the perfect blend of sweetness and heat.”

(The website doesn’t mention it, but the sandwich also has pickles, and a decent amount of a mildly zippy mayo-based sauce.)

It’s… fine?  Like I said, it’s a pretty standard sandwich, though the slight sweetness from the honey does work pretty well.  I was afraid it was going to be too sweet, but it was actually pretty subtle.  Plus, the zippy pickle slices do a good job of balancing out the honey’s sweetness.

As for the heat, it’s mildly spicy, but nothing that’s going to get anyone too hot and bothered.  Even McDonald’s recent attempt at a spicy chicken sandwich, the McSpicy, is hotter.

Mostly, it’s a solid sandwich.  Mostly.  This is a luck of the draw thing, but the chicken itself was pretty dry and tough.  I know they can’t do this (because it would acknowledge that the current way they do things sucks), but if you’re not in a rush, I really wish they’d let you wait for piece of chicken that’s freshly fried, rather than getting one that’s been drying out in a drawer.  Oh well.

The McSpicy isn’t the most exciting new item at McDonald’s.  It’s basically a spicy McCrispy?  I don’t think the chicken patty is identical, but the flavour and texture of the breading is similar enough that if they had called this the Spicy McCrispy, no one would have batted an eye.

Here’s how McDonald’s describes it: “The McSpicy chicken sandwich brings the heat, made with 100% seasoned white meat chicken breast marinated, battered and breaded in a fiery seasoning blend. Enjoy this crispy delight topped with shredded lettuce and cooling mayo-style sauce, all in a toasted sesame seed bun.”

McSpicy at McDonald's

It’s not super exciting, but also: it’s pretty good.  Notably, the spice level is actually surprisingly pronounced.  No, it’s not going to blow your face off, but for something from a fast food joint, it’s got some heat.

And that spice actually does make a difference — it takes what would otherwise be a pretty ho-hum, vaguely dry fast food chicken sandwich and gives it a decent amount of personality.
