Things have gotten a bit better over the last few years, but generally speaking, if a fast food joint claims that they’re serving something spicy, it’s probably mild at best.  But given that this is a collaboration with Hot Ones, I was excited that this would be a bit spicier than the norm.

They have a couple of Hot Ones items on the menu, but the spiciest is supposedly the Darin’ Dab Ghost Wings: “Classic wings (bone-in) dusted with a bold ghost pepper dry rub, served with a Hot Ones Last Dab Ranch dip cup.”

(You can also supposedly buy a little packet of the notoriously fiery Last Dab hot sauce, though I think this might not be available in Canada — I tried a couple of locations, and no one seemed to even know what I was talking about.)

The wings themselves are only mildly spicy, but the Last Dab Ranch dip actually does have a nice kick (and otherwise tastes like pretty standard ranch).  I was kinda hoping for it to blow my face off, and it wasn’t even remotely that hot, but it was almost certainly the spiciest thing I’ve ever had from a fast food chain.

Otherwise, the wings were fine.  They were maybe the teeny-tiniest wings I’ve ever had, but they were hot and fresh and had a nice crispy exterior.

Quick Bites: Slow Jams, Emmer, Mascot Brewery

Slow Jams is a pop-up that specializes in Filipino BBQ and fried chicken; I tried their fried chicken sandwich (“coconut & lemongrass brine, spicy banana ketchup & soy pickled cucumbers”) at last year’s Taste of Little Italy street festival, and it was quite tasty.  The bright red sauce its slathered in kinda tastes like the stuff you’ll find on sweet and sour chicken balls; it’s a bit overly sweet, but the pickles do a pretty good job of balancing things out.  Otherwise, it’s nice and crunchy, and the dark meat within is pleasantly juicy.  It didn’t rock my world, but it’s a solid fried chicken sandwich.

The pistachio croissant is probably the thing that Emmer is the most well known for, but every time I’ve gone, it’s been sold out.  They had just put out a fresh tray of them on my most recent visit, and yeah, of course I got one.  It’s good!  And it certainly looks impressive, with the generous layer of crushed pistachios on top.  The croissant was maybe a bit overbaked (it was slightly dry) and I think inherently, a pistachio croissant will never be as good as an almond croissant.  But I still quite enjoyed this; it’s got a nice pistachio flavour, a good balance between the croissant and the filling, and its sweetness was very well balanced.

Mascot Brewery, nestled away in an industrial area of Etobicoke, is a definite hidden gem.  They’ve got a nice patio, a decent selection of sharable snacks and sandwiches, and  — as you’d expect from a brewpub — a bunch of interesting beer on tap.  I had the Buffalo wings (“Honey Buffalo Sauce, Buttermilk Ranch”), and they were quite tasty.  I didn’t particularly notice any sweetness (they tasted like pretty standard Buffalo wings to me), but these were otherwise quite tasty, and the buttermilk ranch was a definite upgrade over the standard jarred stuff.

I’ve mentioned before that I make it a general policy on this blog to not compare dishes to the real deal in whatever country they’re from.  I just don’t think it’s particularly useful or fair, for a number of reasons.

But sometimes I’ve gotta do it.  In this case, I pretty much fell in love with the cheese noodles I had in Hong Kong, and was very excited when I saw that they had them on the menu at Garden Hong Kong Cafe in Markham.

It’s a really simple dish; it’s basically just instant noodles with cheese sauce.  In Hong Kong, it was served with braised pork cheek on the side; here, it was chicken wings.

I will say that the version at Garden Hong Kong Cafe was tasty enough, especially when you top it with a generous spoonful (or two, or three) of the garlicky, sweet chili oil they have on the table.  That chili oil is doing about 95 percent of the heavy lifting in making this as good as it is, but hey — tasty is tasty.  I’m not complaining.

Sadly, the cheese sauce here is pretty bland, and is applied very sparingly to the noodles (as opposed to Hong Kong, where the sauce completely smothered the dish and had a delightfully sharp cheesy flavour).

Still, that aforementioned chili oil is delicious enough to smooth over any of the dish’s faults, and at $8.50 (!) — which includes a mug of delicious milk tea — it’s hard to deny that it’s an absolute steal.

I should note that this place is very small and very busy (it was already packed and had a waiting list when I showed up a few minutes after they opened on a recent Saturday), so keep that in mind.

Fried Chicken Wing Perfection at Chica’s Chicken

Well, I’ve now tried everything on the menu at Chica’s Chicken, which means I can say the following with a reasonable amount of authority: it’s the best.  The literal best.

I honestly can’t recall having better fried chicken anywhere in the city.  It’s everything you’re looking for: it’s got that amazing crispy crunch, it’s so damn tasty, and the chicken itself is ridiculously moist.  Perfection.

I got the wings this time; an order comes with four giant wings, and it’s an absurd amount of food.  They don’t cut the wings into segments like most places — it feels like a pain at first, but it gives you more of that crispy, crunchy skin.

You also get a side, and two slices of plain white bread.  For 16 bucks, it’s a absolute steal considering the quantity and quality of the food.

Sorry, every other chicken wing I’ve ever had: you’re absolute garbage compared to what Chica’s is serving.

I got it hot AF; as on my previous visits, they aren’t kidding around with the heat.  It hurts so good.

I think I’m ready to install a cot in the back of the restaurant so that I can eat all my meals here.  Will I die of a massive heart attack by my 40th birthday?  Probably.  Will it be worth it?  Absolutely.
